5 cosy ways to create a hygge bedroom

warm minimalist bedroom

The best part of my day is climbing in to bed each night with a good book or podcast. I look forward to this moment each day as my bedroom is the one place where I can totally unwind and relax and switch off from everything. That’s why making my bedroom cosy, comforting and calm is so important and even more so in the cold and dark months.

By now you’ve likely heard the Danish word hygge which is the perfect way to describe how a bedroom should look and feel to maximise relaxation and sleep. So, if you’re looking for some ideas to make your bedroom feel cosier and more comforting, I’m sharing some tips below.

5 cosy ways to create a hygge bedroom

1. Use soft, warm lighting

Bright lights are anything but cosy especially in a bedroom where we want to relax and sleep. That’s why I have a rule that no overhead lights can be turned on after 7pm. Instead, I have a portable bedside lamp that has three dimmer settings, none of which are bright and all are soft. The light gives off a gorgeous warm glow which is perfect for creating a cocooning feeling in the bedroom.

If you don’t already have soft lighting in your room, this one thing will make such a difference to the mood and feel of your bedroom. Any warm toned bedside lights or wall lights will do the trick, especially dimmable ones,  just as long as they aren’t bright.

2. Opt for calming colours

It’s no secret that colours can play a huge role in creating the mood and feel of a room and they impact our mood too. In a bedroom you want to feel calm and bright colours can take away from this. Warm neutrals like beiges, blushes and creamy whites work really well. You can always complement this with a few pops of colour if you love colour.

If you love dark colours, theses can work too as long as they’re dark neutrals like a dark grey or a deep chocolate brown. Dark colours can in fact create a cocooning feel in a room and they really come into their own during the colder months.

3. Make it very comfortable

If your bedroom looks wonderful but isn’t comfortable, it won’t feel cosy and welcoming. Making your space comfy goes a long way to helping you relax and unwind.

Consider things like layering your bed for the perfect amount of warmth, a good quality mattress that feels good to sleep on (e.g. the affordable king-size Beautyrest Mattresses ), consider bedding in fabrics that are soft and feel good against your skin and things like a plush rug for your feet to land on every morning and night.

Comfort is personal so adapt it to what works for you. I love linen bedding and a fairly firm mattress so that’s precisely what I have on my bed. I also find it comforting to have a soft blanket over my duvet in the winter months to keep me extra cosy, so I’ve added that to my bed too.

4. Consider smells

Scent is a big part of hygge so when you’re trying to create a hygge atmosphere in your bedroom consider how your bedroom smells because certain smells can help you relax and fall asleep.

Softly scented candles are always a good idea and besides, their flickering glow also creates a lovely ambience. Relaxing pillow mists are another possibility especially in natural fragrances like lavender, rosemary and chamomile.

5. Cut the clutter

A cluttered bedroom is chaotic. It looks and feels busy and will definitely not help you feel relaxed. As research has shown clutter can make us feel anxious and stressed and that is not how we want to feel in our bedrooms.

Even a small amount of clutter can take away from a hygge bedroom. Things like a pile of clothes on a chair or scattered shoes or countertops with too much stuff are all not great for relaxation.
