Making a wreath is probably my favourite Christmas craft. This year, instead of greenery I decided to use some star anise to make my wreath and I love how it turned out. This little spice looks so pretty with its imperfect star shape and it’s deep reddy-orangey brown colour. And best of all — this diy wreath smells amazing.
This star anise wreath is really quick and easy to make but there are a few things to note, all of which I’ve shared below. I haven’t yet decided where to hang this wreath as I haven’t started putting up my Christmas decorations yet. But since it’s so easy to make, I might make a few more wreaths so I can have them dotted around my home. The idea of that gorgeous smell all over my home is irresistible!
DIY star anise wreath for Christmas
Materials:
metal rings (US readers here) – I painted my ring black as I didn’t like the shiny metal finish but this is optional
star anise (US readers here)
hot glue gun
ribbon
First paint your ring, if you want to. Once dry, simply glue your star anise on to the metal ring, one by one. Try and adjust the star points so that each of the stars fit snugly next to each other. Leave a little gap for your ribbon — the size will depend on the width of your ribbon
tips for making the star anise wreath:
- use the star anise that are whole or only slightly broken
- use a generous amount of glue for each star anise otherwise they might fall off
- after sticking each one on, hold for a few seconds to ensure it sticks
- watch your fingers — I burnt myself several times!
Last thing I’ll add is that you can go bigger with the wreath but I think a smaller size works best because the star anise are quite small and they’d look a bit lost on a big wreath. I’ve linked to the rings I used above so you can check out the size I used.
I love how this wreath turned out especially as it’s so simple yet so pretty and smells so good.
