It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of IKEA. I have Ikea stuff in every room in my home – some left as I bought it and some of it hacked. And that’s where Ikea becomes even more special. If something isn’t quite how you want it, or the colour isn’t right or you simply want to upgrade your IKEA furniture, the hacking potential is limitless.
An IKEA hack often involves some DIY but in recent years, there are lots of companies that have popped up to help you upgrade your Ikea furniture without doing much yourself. While I still can’t resist a good DIY IKEA hack, I also love the idea of easily upgrading my Ikea furniture.
I’ve picked out 4 of the best places to go to upgrade your IKEA furniture very easily. The best part of these upgrades is that your IKEA pieces will look much more expensive and unique without you having to spend on expensive furniture. I mean who would have guessed that wardrobe pictured above is from IKEA but with custom doors?
Upgrade your IKEA furniture
1. Comfort Works
Got an IKEA sofa that’s seen better days? Chances are there’s nothing wrong with the sofa but it’s the covers that look worn after years of use. Instead of replacing the sofa, simply replace the covers. Comfort Works make custom covers for a huge range of IKEA sofas in all kinds of colours and fabrics. They gifted me beautiful white linen covers for my IKEA Soderhamn sofa and it’s transformed my sofa – pictured above (find more pics as well as the before of this sofa here).
My IKEA sofa was in really good shape and it was only the covers that were looking very tired. If you’re in a similar situation, instead of buying a new sofa, it’s a far more sustainable idea to replace the covers. I opted for linen as it’s such a beautiful material and the creases just add to that relaxed, cosy feel but Comfort Works have lots of other fabrics too. Replacing the covers can absolutely transform your IKEA sofa turning it into a piece that looks brand new!
2. Superfront
When it comes to clever storage solutions, IKEA has all the answers. And their Pax wardrobe system is a bestseller exactly because of this. It offers so many configurations, sizes and storage options so you can customise it to exactly what you need. But there isn’t too much choice when it comes to the wardrobe doors. This is where Superfront comes in. Superfront make super stylish doors for the Ikea Pax wardrobe in a range of colours and finishes. Their doors will make your Ikea wardrobe look so much more expensive than it is.
Superfront are based in Sweden and their ethos revolves around sustainability. Why throw out a piece of furniture when you can simply upgrade it and give it a new look. They don’t just do wardrobe doors though, they also do doors for the IKEA Besta and Metod ranges. But it was the wardrobe doors that really stood out for me – those ribbed doors pictured above are so minimal and beautiful, don’t you think?
3. Ask Og Eng
There are many places that make doors for Ikea kitchen cabinets but none as beautiful as Ask Og Eng, especially if you love a warm, minimal Nordic interior like me. Ask Og Eng make high quality kitchen doors out of sustainable bamboo. All their doors are handmade in Norway and fit IKEA’s popular Metod (called Sektion in some countries) kitchen range.
While all made of bamboo, the doors come in different finishes from light to dark. Whether you prefer a dark kitchen, the palest colour or something in between, there is plenty to choose from. I love the dark finish of the kitchen pictured above especially as it’s contrasted with pale white marble and white walls. With Ask Og Eng doors your IKEA kitchen will look so stunning without paying the price tag of high end kitchens which can cost tens of thousands.
4. Pretty Pegs
They say design is all in the detail and that’s where Pretty Pegs come in. Sometimes all you need to upgrade your IKEA furniture is to switch out a few small details that have a big impact. I’m talking things like handles, knobs and furniture legs. Changing these details isn’t just about upgrading your IKEA pieces but it’s also a simple and quick way to make your pieces unique to you and your style. Pretty Pegs have a range of furniture legs for sofas, tables, beds and cabinets as well as lots of handles and knobs to choose from.
Once again Pretty Pegs are a Nordic company from Sweden. They also believe in giving your IKEA pieces longevity by simply giving the pieces a few new details that match your personality and your home. The simple switch to black legs changes the look of the IKEA sofa pictured above. The contrast of the white with the black legs works really well in this living space. But if not for your sofa, you can switch up your bed or your cabinet handles for a new look.
