If you love your neutrals, you can’t go wrong with any shade you choose, whether that’s white, beige or grey. But sometimes these colours can look a little lacking on their own. While there are many colours that can complement neutrals, there’s one thats really standing out for me right now — warm and earthy shades of rust.
Neutrals and especially pale neutrals form the perfect backdrop for earthy, warm rust shades since they allow rust to really pop whether you have a little bit of rust or lots of it.
Rust adds plenty of warmth to a room as well, making your space look cozy and inviting. And theres so much variation within the shade from soft, pale rusty shades to bolder and brighter hues. So if you’ve got a living room that feels like it’s missing something, rust could be just the accent colour you need.
Here are five living rooms that beautifully include rust accents in varying degrees:
This living room has light grey walls and features a few striking rust accents. The large artwork (which you can shop here) is the standout rust piece here and then you have a couple of cushions in different shades of rust. The flowers, though more reddish, perfectly complement all the other rust tones in this room.
This living room has a lot more rust accents including two rust armchairs and a large brown rug. However the rust tones chosen here are pale and muted. This is ideal if you want to keep the look understated but still add warmth to a neutral living room.
Curtains are another great way to add a big pop of rust. The white walls contrast the curtains (AFF – shop similar curtains here) perfectly, making them stand out even more. In this room they’ve also got a large rust coloured leather armchair and a few other smaller rust accents. There are many leather pieces out there that come in a similar cognac shade which would all work really well whether thats a sofa, bench or armchair. (AFF – here’s a leather armchair that I’m loving)
This living room uses the most rust of all with a large sofa (AFF – find the sofa here) and an upholstered stool in in different shades of rust. By adding lots of wood and combining that with lots of rust, you can create a moody look, that looks and feels so cozy. But this room still maintains a warm, neutral feel because aside from the rust the only other colours are black, white and natural wood.
As you can see, there are different ways to add rust accents depending on personal preference and there are different looks you can create with rust accents. You can go bold with bigger accents or keep the accents small. You can also choose whatever shades of rust you prefer whether thats brighter or more muted tones or a mix of different ones.
