Neutral colour schemes are timeless so it’s no surprise that they are so popular. Sometimes though, neutral living rooms can feel a bit flat or feel like they’re missing something. Adding a pop of colour — even a small or subtle hint of colour – may just be the solution to brining your room to life.
Scandinavian homes tend to do this really well. While a lot of Scandi decor is neutral, they often include a touch of colour which makes the entire room come together. And we’re really talking a hint of colour here — nothing too overpowering! The best part is that adding a hint of colour to a neutral living room is easy to do without much effort on your part.
Here are some simple ways to add some colour to a neutral living room
bring in a colourful cushion or two
Most of us tend to have cushions in our living rooms because they add character, comfort and look cosy. If you’re experimenting with bringing a touch of colour in to your neutral living room, cushions are the best way to start. Just one or two cushions can make a difference and they’re so easy to switch up every season or whenever you want a change. While I’m talking cushions, throws or blankets will work just as well.
add some coloured wall art
If you’d rather stick to neutrals with your furniture and furnishings, try adding a piece of art in a favourite colour. It’s a great way to introduce a pop of colour to a neutral space and you can go as bold or as muted as you like. For. e.g. I’ve seen Bauhaus art examples in Scandi spaces as Bauhaus art is simple and minimal and works really well in neutral interiors. Alternatively, abstract art works well in a pared back interior. These are a couple of examples, but art is personal so choose whatever colour and style that speaks to you.
incorporate flowers and plants
Flowers and plants not only help create that indoor-outdoor feeling, but they add texture and make a space feel welcoming. In a mostly white interior, just a large pop of green can be enough to create a contrast and add colour. But bold flowers too can add a much-needed colour pop in a white or pale toned room. For e.g. I love displaying some deep red or rust coloured branches in autumn or a bunch of softly coloured Icelandic poppies in summer.
choose a statement piece of furniture
Another way to bring some colour into your living room is with one statement piece of furniture. While this is more permanent than some of the other ways, it can create an impact and a focal point in a living space. This can include a coloured chair or table or even a coloured light — the options are plenty depending on how bold you want to go. For e.g. a green or pink veined marble table will add a subtle touch of colour or for something bolder, try a chair or ottoman in a striking shade of your choice.
introduce a coloured rug
If an accent piece of furniture isn’t for you, try a patterned rug instead — I like to think of rugs as art for your floors. To add a touch of colour with a rug, opt for muted tones as rugs tend to be large and so anything too bright might be overpowering. You can opt for a single-coloured rug or something with two or three tones. For e.g. simple graphic patterned rugs or vintage style rugs with more intricate patterns — both will work in a neutral living space.
add some coloured decorations
Adding a few small decorations in coloured tones could be just the pop of colour your living room needs. Its small things like a coloured glass vase or some coloured candlesticks or even books that add a small hint of colour to a room. Just this little dose of colour can be very impactful, especially in all white rooms.
