mini rainbow DIY clay magnets (for your fridge or magnetic board)

DIY clay fridge magnets

These mini rainbow shaped DIY clay magnets couldn’t be cuter or easier to make.

I always have little notes and quotes on my fridge and magnetic board so I’m always needing magnets for them. I never buy magnets as they’re so easy to make and you can create exactly what you want.

A while ago I made these DIY clay coasters which were the inspiration for these DIY magnets. I’m using them as magnets but once you make these mini clay rainbows, you can use them in so many ways — from table decorations to jewellery and so much more.

I’ve opted for neutral tone-on-tone colours because I love my neutrals but you can choose any colour you like. You can also use coloured clay so you won’t even need to paint them.

Materials:
polymer clay | US readers here
paint
fine sand paper (I recommend these as they can be used for so many projects | US here)
metal ruler
small strong magnets | US readers here

Start by rolling a chunk of clay in to a ball. Then roll the ball in to a long, snake-like shape with the palm of your hands. The approximate thickness to aim for is around 6mm/0.25 inch.

Start forming your rainbow arches with the biggest arch first. Cut the clay to form the first arch, making sure you leave extra clay on both ends of the arch. This is because the whole thing will be trimmed later.

Create the next arch to fit very snuggly under the first and trim clay to the same length as the first arch. Create the third arch in the same way.

Take an extra piece of your rolled out clay clay and mould it gently to fit under the third arch to complete the rainbow – video shows exactly how. Cut the rainbow with a metal ruler (I find this gives the cleanest cut) — my mini clay rainbows measure about 5.5cms / 2.2 inches at their widest and are about 3cms / 1.2 inches high.

Bake according to instructions. Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges at the base of the rainbow and paint. You can use acrylic paint or my preference is interior wall paints (either leftovers or sample pots) as they give a nicer finish and require fewer coats.

Also you don’t need to glue the arches because they stay together once baked – this is as long as you make them really snug and touching each other.

These rainbows are so cute so I’m thinking of making a bunch more to turn in to napkin rings. Come the festive season, these would make fun tree decorations too.

You can even make bigger versions of these by following the exact same tutorial, and use them as trivets or make a wall decoration. They also offer endless decor opportunities in a kids room.

Here’s a short video on how to make these DIY clay magnets:

I love making things from clay because the possibilities are endless. If you love clay crafts too, you might like these unusual DIY clay coasters and these cute clay pendants.
