Little decor ideas for big impact: rearrange your room

rearrange your room

There are lots of little things you can do to refresh a room that either cost very little or nothing at all. Today’s little decor idea for big impact is exactly one of those things – rearrange your room to create a brand new look.  The best part of this idea is that it’s totally free yet can completely transform any room.

If you’ve got a room that you’re bored of or you feel that it doesn’t quite work, rather then buying new stuff, try moving things around.  You’ll be amazed at how different your room will look without adding anything new.

I grew up in a home where my father’s idea of a fun Sunday afternoon was to rearrange the furniture, mainly in the living room.  My brother and I were always called in to help move stuff around.  As a teenager this was hardly my idea of fun!  But in retrospect I realise what an easy way this is to transform a room without spending a penny!  Every so often we would have a new look living room without buying anything new.

There are no rules for rearranging a room as there is no right or wrong way to do it – keep getting creative and trying different layouts until you’re happy with one.  When you are rearranging a room the most obvious thing to move is the furniture but there is so much more than furniture that you can switch up .

Here are some other things that you can move around when you rearrange your room:

1. art

This is the easiest way to change up your room by simply moving your art around.  And you don’t have to stop with the art that’s already in the room.  For a whole new look, you could swap art between rooms.

2. rugs

Rugs are another way of changing the look – something as simple as swapping the living room rug with the dining room rug can make a big difference.  The only thing to bear in mind is that the size of the rugs should be appropriate to the space.  Beyond that, switch away or try layering rugs for a different look.

3. plants

Plants are yet another small thing to move around to refresh your room.  And don’t just move them from one table/stand to another but try placing them at different heights like the floor or a low table or on a pile of books or magazines.

4. textiles

Change the look of your sofa or a chair by moving around any cushions and throws you already have.  You can also switch up bed linen to change the look of your bedroom.  And a dining table with or without a tablecloth looks pretty different.

5. lighting

Moving around any floor or table lights you have can change the entire mood of a room. You don’t have to stop there though – you could swap pendant lights around from one room to another or within a room.

6. objects

If you have decorative objects in your home, try moving them around.  Things like sculptures, vases, ceramics, candle holders and storage baskets can all be moved to create a different look.

I’ve deliberately left furniture off the list as that is the one we all think about when we want to rearrange a room. Even if you can’t move big furniture because space is limited or you don’t want to, moving a few of the things mentioned above can have a big impact.
