splurge vs. steal: the modular sofa

budget and splurge modular sofas

A bunch of my readers told me that they’d really be interested in a high-low series on here so I’m excited to introduce it today. High/low simply means a high-end decor item (the splurge) and a similar one at a much lower price point (the steal).

For the very first splurge vs. steal, I’ve got a modular sofa. Before I get in to the sofas, I’ll just say that modular sofas are great because you can configure them to fit your space perfectly. And if you move home to a bigger place, you can add to the same sofa to make it suitable for your new space. Conversely, if you move to a smaller space, you can break up the sofa and use the various seats separately; either in the same room or in different rooms.

Splurge vs. Steal: Modular Sofa

As you can see, both the sofas are pretty similar with the main difference being the back rest which is curved on the “splurge” one and angular on the “steal” sofa.

I’ve pictured two with an almost identical configuration to show how similar they are. Both feature a chaise at one end and wider seat at the other, without a back rest. Though one has the chaise on the right and the other on the left, this can easily be changed as they’re both modular — I couldn’t find an image with the exact same configuration.

Being modular sofas, both come in so many different layouts so you can create the exact sofa you want. It can be a two-seater, three-seater or much bigger, it can be configured with or without a chaise, backrests are optional too and you can also add  armrests at each end or just one end. The options are truly endless for both and they’re both Scandinavian designs.

The “splurge” sofa comes in a range of beautiful fabrics including bouclé, wool bouclé, velvet and more. It also comes in various neutral colours from creamy white to mid and dark brown, a pale blue-grey and a deep olive green.

In addition to the numerous configurations, this sofa also features a softly rounded corner section so you can create the perfect sectional, no matter your space.

Steal Sofa

The “steal” sofa is hiding a handy little secret — it has storage. The seats of each section lifts up to reveal a hidden storage compartment making this not only a stylish sofa but one that’s really practical too.

The sofa is covered in a corduroy style fabric that is removable and washable and you can get other covers too so you can switch up the look whenever you want. There are nine colours to choose from in the US including neutral hues like white, beige, brown and deep green and bolder shades like mustard and blue. In the UK you have seven shades available with the dark brown and the mid-beige one not being available.

Splurge vs. steal: which should you pick?

The answer is, it depends on your budget. Both have infinite configurations meaning they’ll be suitable for any space, big or small. And both offer a range of colours though the splurge sofa comes mainly in neutral tones whereas the steal sofa comes in brighter hues too.

Aside from budget, the splurge looks more designed and the curves add interest and softness. It also looks more plush with it’s thick seats. On the other hand, the steal sofa has removable, replaceable and washable covers which is very handy for busy family homes. And it has storage which is so practical and useful.
