When we think about updating our homes or elevating them in any way, we usually think of the big stuff. We might have our eye on a high-end sofa or a gorgeous marble coffee table or something similar. Though these things can elevate a space, it’s the little, often overlooked details that make a big difference.
Paying attention to these details isn’t only about aesthetics though, it’s also about creating a home that feels intentional. Small updates can transform a space whether thats switching out cabinet pulls or adding textures. Once you pay attention to these details, you’ll see just how much of an impact they have on your space. And the best part is that they’re all so quick and easy to do so you’ll see results instantly.
Here are 5 small and simple details that can instantly elevate your home:
1. Consider the lighting
Lighting is far more transformative than many people realise. It can completely change the look of a room and it helps create the right mood and ambience. I’m not talking only about the big, overhead pendant light which is important but equally important are intentionally chosen wall, table and floor lamps.
Depending on the lighting in your room, just switching out the main overhead light for something more impactful may be enough. Or for other spaces it may be about bringing in more lights, especially if you don’t have multiple light sources. Accent lamps, whether on the wall, floor or table, all contribute to making a space feel more refined.
2. Upgrade your switch plates and outlets
Switch plates and electric outlets may seem like a small detail but they can make a big difference to a room. Old, yellowing switch plates can instantly date a space but the good news is that they are so quick and easy to change. And there are so many different styles out there to choose from. For example, you can get premium brass designs by Corston or you can opt for matte black finishes which look striking against white walls. Alternatively you can get coloured plates too that can match your wall colour or contrast it, depending on the look you’re going for.
3. Switch up the hardware
Much like switch plates, carefully chosen hardware can make a home look so much more expensive and elevated. Think things like door handles and hinges, drawer handles, cabinet pulls and taps. And don’t forget things like window hardware and curtain rails. Replacing basic ones with more elevated designs, materials and finishes will give you an instant upgrade.
4. Swap out textiles
This is another easy swap that can make a big difference. Updating your sofa cushions, throws and/or your bed linen can change up the look of your room and make it look more considered. Alternatively, your space may look like it’s lacking in some way because rooms without texture can look like they’re missing something so adding in different textiles will also upgrade the space.
5. Refresh with paint
Paint is one of the easiest and most impactful ways to upgrade and transform any room. Most rooms can be painted in a weekend but usually less, so while it may not be as instant as some of the others on this list, it’s still a very quick way to update a room and the results are huge.
Changing up the colour will give you the biggest transformation but if not, a fresh coat of paint in the same colour will uplift any room. Rooms that haven’t been painted in a few years look dated and can drag the entire space down, no matter what other beautiful decor you have in there.
