Leather drawstring pouch diy

leather drawstring pouch diy

I can think of so many uses for these little diy leather drawstring pouches. I’m using them to keep bits of jewellery, coins and all sorts of tiny things that don’t seem to have a home and often get lost.  I also love them to use as a gift bag.

I got so excited about making these that I even made a little video which you can see below. Once you make these leather drawstring pouches, they look great hung up from a hook or a rail. It’s fun to use them as little decorations with a purpose.

MATERIALS:
leather off-cuts* (I got mine here)
sharp fabric scissors
leather punch pliers
flat faux suede cord (3mm wide)
pen and ruler
*my leather off-cuts were all muted tones like browns and greys but if you want brighter colours, ask before ordering or check elsewhere.

Using a plate (or anything round) measuring 28cms (approx 11″), draw a circle on the back of the leather using a pen (pencil won’t show up).  Cut out the circle.

On the back of your circular piece of leather, draw another circle – about 1.5 cms smaller. This will be a guide to where to make your holes. Now mark out the places where you will make your holes, on the circle you have just drawn – they will be around every 2.5cms (approx 1″) apart and you need to ensure you have an even number of holes.

Use your leather punch plier to make 2.5mm holes all around.  As the cord is 3mm, I went for slightly smaller holes so that the cord was snug and tight.  String your suede cord through these holes, weaving in and out.  Once done, pull the cord tightly to close the pouch and cut off the excess cord.

I made the pouches in 3 different sizes.  So you can always go a bit bigger or smaller, depending on what you want to keep in there.  The main things to remember are that the holes should be evenly spaced out and you need an even number of holes.

Here’s a short video on this leather drawstring pouch diy:

These leather pouches don’t take much time to make and are a fun leather project if you can’t sew, like me!

This leather drawstring pouch diy is quick to make and it’s a great way to use up off-cuts of leather.  The pouches are so soft and lovely to touch and they look great on display.
