Internal glass dividers don’t often get talked about, yet they’re such a great way to divide up spaces inside a home. Scandi homes use them frequently because they create separation while still letting light through, they don’t look visually heavy and they look aesthetically great too.
Internal glass dividers can be either glass walls or doors or a combination of both. With glass walls you can opt for floor to ceiling glass, or you can have a part solid wall with glass on top. With glass doors, the type of door can vary depending on the space and purpose of the divider, but the main ones are swing doors, sliding doors and folding doors. Sometimes partial glass dividers are also used as features to add visual interest or to give the illusion of separation.

When it comes to styles, there are so many to choose from. The most commonly seen glass dividers have black frames which look the most modern in my opinion, but you can have light or dark wooden frames and white frames too. And styles vary too with fewer or more panels in the glass and even some with no panels and just an outer frame. You can also choose between different types of glass from clear glass to fluted and frosted glass.
Before getting into some of the best ways to use glass dividers, it’s worth mentioning that if you’re considering this for your interior it’s best to get a few quotes from local suppliers like In Out Solutions as these dividers are always custom made. They have to be fitted to your space and requirements, so you need a professional to do it.
7 ways to use glass dividers in a home
1. Separate a sleeping area
In studio apartments and small homes, this is a great way to zone off a sleeping area especially if the space needs to serve several purposes. I’ve also seen glass dividers used in a bedroom that is shared between two siblings or between parents and a child, so each has their own area and to ensure both spaces have light.
2. Divide a larger room into zones
Most of us live in homes where each room needs to serve more than one purpose, often several functions and glass dividers are great for creating distinct zones without closing off the space. For instance, it may make sense to zone a large room into a living, dining, kitchen and media space.
3. Create a wardrobe area
Glass walls are great for creating a separate storage area in a bedroom. Visually they’re less bulky than big wardrobes and glass doors while practical, also double up as an architectural feature. If you feel the wardrobe space may look busy and cluttered, you can always add curtains behind the glass doors.
4. Partition off a kitchen
This is a great option if you’re not sure about a completely open plan kitchen. With glass doors, the kitchen feels part of the room but not as much as a completely open kitchen.
That’s not all though. If you have a small kitchen or a windowless kitchen (or both), a glass partition is the ideal solution. It will make the space feel bigger and brighter. You don’t always have to go for floor to ceiling glass but instead you could use half a solid wall, allowing you to place kitchen units against it and the top half can be glass.
5. Create a small extra room (within a room)
Using glass dividers is a great way to create an extra room like a home office space or a utility room. Once again you can go for half solid and half glass if that’s more practical but you can also opt for floor to ceiling glass if that works better for your space.
6. Use it an an illusion of separation
If you simply want to create an illusion of separation between two spaces, a couple of glass panels will do just that like in the wood and marble kitchen above. This is a really clever way to use glass dividers and can be used in so many spaces, not just kitchens.
7. Create an entryway
Sometimes apartments have no separation between the living area and the entryway, and it feels like the front door is practically in the living space. Glass dividers are a great idea here because you can create an entryway area without it feeling small, cramped. or dark.
