You’ve likely heard of the Danish concept of hygge especially if you’re keen on nordic lifestyle and interiors. And you’ve probably also heard of the Swedish idea of lagom too. Recently I came across another Swedish term that really resonated with me and I think it will with you too — vardagslyx.
Vardagslyx, isn’t nearly as well known as hygge or lagom — each of which has whole books written about them — but it’s an idea that translates to “everyday luxury”. That’s the literal meaning but it means so much more than that.
So, what exactly is vardagslyx?
The word vardagslyx combines two Swedish words — vardaglig (everyday) and lyx (luxury). In short, Vardagslyx is about making everyday feel special without necessarily spending money or making any big changes.
Though the word luxury is part of the term, it’s not about literal luxuries or expensive things. Instead it’s all about finding joy in the small moments and appreciating small details for more happiness and fulfilment in everyday life. It’s a way of reminding ourselves that life doesn’t have to be extraordinary to be beautiful; sometimes, the simplest pleasures are the most luxurious.
I like to think about it like this — most of us have routine lives with plenty of mundane stuff that we have to do each week. So why not inject special moments in to your everyday life and take a moment to appreciate them. This could be as simple as using your favourite dinner plates weekly (instead of saving them for special occasions). Another simple example could be placing some fresh flowers by your bedside table — something to appreciate the moment you wake up (instead of perhaps hitting snooze!).
5 ways to embrace vasdagslyx (in your home and your everyday life)
1. create daily rituals
Create small and simple everyday rituals that bring you joy. The best part is you get to create the rituals you love. One of my favourite daily rituals is lighting a (aff) scented candle every evening. Another is getting up 10 minutes before everyone else to have a quite moment with my cup of coffee.
2. elevate everyday basics
This is something I practiced long before I heard about vardagslyx and it brings me so much joy. Whether it’s a coffee mug or a (aff) bath towel, make sure your everyday things are not just practical but aesthetically pleasing too. Even the most mundane things like toilet paper holders and kitchen scissors can be beautiful. Because if you’re going to look at it and use it everyday, why shouldn’t it be something you love.
3. make routine moments special
Everyone has boring, repetitive routines but that doesn’t mean you can’t take a few moments to make it more special. This could look like wearing something that makes you feel good when you’re working from home. Or putting on your favourite music or podcast while doing chores.
4. plan tiny treats
Don’t wait for the weekend to do fun things. Instead plan a few special things for each week whether that’s a candlelit bath, a family movie night or a trip to your favourite bookstore. One of my favourites is cooking special meals at least once or twice in the week because I love both cooking and eating so why should special meals be reserved for the weekend or special occasions only.
5. display a few favourite objects
Keeping your favourite decorations in sight in every room will bring you joy. Whether that’s a favourite candle holder, vase, book, sculpture or painting… there are so many objects you could choose from. The key is to make them visible so you can appreciate them everyday.
6. use your best stuff
Got beautiful dinner plates? Use them regularly. Got a favourite sweater? Wear it often. Don’t fall in to the trap of saving your best stuff for “one day”. Instead let these things bring you joy in your daily life.
These are just a few ways to think about vardagslyx but the essence of this word is about creating, noticing and appreciating the small, beautiful moments that happen each day. And the best part — once you start practicing this idea, you will naturally have a more joyful and happy existence every day.

Oh I love this. I hadn’t heard of the term but will practise saying it and incorporating it more into my lifestyle. As you might remember, luxury was one of my words of the year recently and it was a lovely reminder to appreciate the moment and those simple everyday joys. My favourite little luxuries include treating myself to a solo cinema trip, wandering a bookstore or museum shop, and of course music is a constant in our house. Always dancing! Thanks for sharing this term and for the great tips too x
