a quick hack to upgrade a very budget-friendly urn vase

make a basic vase look more expensive

I’ve been wanting an urn style vase for a while but they can be pretty pricey. I then stumbled across this one online for £12 and promptly ordered it.

When it arrived, I loved the shape but wasn’t crazy about the colour and the overall look — it looked better in pics than in real life. On screen it looks beige but was much more grey in real life and it looked pretty basic. To be fair though, it was only £12 so I wasn’t complaining. Instead of returning it, I thought I’d try and change the colour and see how it looked.

The vase has a textured finish – a sort of (faux) stone look. Even though I was going to change the colour I wanted to keep the texture as thats what gives it some character and a slightly rustic look.

Because of the texture, I knew a paint brush wasn’t the best way to paint it so instead I dabbed on small amounts of acrylic paint with a sponge in layers, waiting for each layer to dry in between. I did three layers as I wanted to cover all the grey. Finally I used a small paintbrush for the inner parts of the handles because I couldn’t get my sponge in there.

For the colour, I opted for a black-brown colour by mixing brown paint with a bit of black. I used matte paint as I didn’t want any shine.

I’m really pleased with how the urn shaped vase turned out. With just a simple paint job, it looks so much better than it did. Black and dark colours are much more forgiving so they’re always great for transforming something that looks well… a bit basic.  Now, unless you lifted up the vase (it’s very light) you’d never guess that it cost just £12!
